" Having noticed a need for an added layer of mental health support on campus, we wanted to work on providing appropriate training to peer supporters who would then become equipped in acting as first responders in the instance of any mental health concerns and would also be able to redirect the individual to mental health resources on campus. The Millennium Fellowship gave me a platform to help construct and start working on this idea. I am also grateful and excited to be connected with several like-minded students through the Fellowship. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Ashoka Peer Support Program for Mental Health

The Ashoka Peer Support Program would comprise of students (about 15 individuals) who would get adequate training to be able to act like a first responder as they would have recieved gatekeeper's training and they would also be equipped with being able to redirect stuents to the mental health support systems available to them on campus. The aim is to have the peer supporters contact details be accessible to the student body to allow them to reach out to the peer supporters in case of any mental health crisis situations like a panic attack, anxiety attack, etc. Under this program, the students are first selected from an applation process, they are to be provided with evidence based training through a partner institute that is qualified to do so. The program is also to be continued as it will be in collaboration with the Minsitry of Community Well-Being that is a studewnt led body within Ashoka University. The ministry will take on the peer supporters program to be continued every year and so it ensures the continuity and integration of the program. This program adds an additional layer of mental health support for students.
