Project Sustenance at its base is a project aimed at spreading awareness about sustainable living. Small and easy everyday habits are the stepping stones toward sustainable development and our focus will be on equipping young minds with the same.

Sustainability is especially crucial in this era, coupled with individual actions and efforts that ultimately contribute to the establishment of improved methods to develop communities, especially in disadvantaged and often underprivileged societies in the Global South. In India, for example, the mean contribution to the carbon footprint is far less than the average citizen of a high-income country in the West. Therefore, this project will enable those involved, as well as others, to identify closely with such ideals, effectively work on the same and bring forth much-needed change.

The project aims at inculcating values of sustainability in school-going children from semi-urban areas in Bengaluru. Through activities and awareness sessions, we plan to focus on the 3Rs, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. These activities will inculcate notions of a more sustainable present and future. One activity that will help demonstrate sustainable living would be teaching children about segregating everyday waste into wet and dry waste. Teaching them the importance of this segregation would also involve helping them identify the difference and subsequently, the benefits of composting. Another activity to both encourage creativity & repurpose waste materials, would be converting colorfully painted plastic bottles into flower pots filled with water-based low maintenance plants such as money plants, to teach school children the importance of nurturing plant growth through an enjoyable painting activity.

The most fundamental aspect of Project Sustenance is the fact that it creates meaningful change at a grassroots level. By introducing the concept of 'sustainability' to young minds, we take the first step in ensuring that these ideas become internalized. In this way, Project Sustenance is sustainable in itself, i.e., such ideas can be passed onto other students, their families, and so on. Waste segregation, reducing, reusing and recycling and sustainability are the first steps to a better, healthier and greener world, for us as well as generations to come.
