University of Chittagong | Chattogram, Bangladesh | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 5
" My connection to the world's most brilliant young brains is made possible via the Millennium Fellowship. I'm excited to read about their efforts and be inspired by them. The goal of my "Obadh" initiative is to support female students during their menstruation. I am excited to discuss my ideas with others and to broaden my concept in nations where girls experience similar problems with menstrual hygiene. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Obadh
The thought of starting "Project Obadh" came to me when I tried to address what you have to face as a female student of Chittagong University. We have a huge campus with about 10,000 female students. But at the time of need, you have to travel about 1km before you find a store. Moreover, it isn't financially convenient to buy a whole packet when you need only one/two pads. We have existing 7 vending machines in different faculties, all of which are non-functional in operation. Many faculties don't even have vending machines.
Our project will have three goals.
1. Reviving the existing vending machines. We have a volunteer team that would be responsible for regulating them and promoting their use on campus.
2. We would implement a Sanitary Napkin Box program, where each class would have representatives who will have a key to the locked napkin-filled box, placed in a female washroom. If anybody needs a napkin, she can contact any of those representatives who would help her purchase the pads from that box. This system will be self-sustaining for each department.
3. In this remote location of Chittagong University, students often do not get medical assistance during their menstruation. There are several medical helplines that students don't know about, that provide free medical assistance. We will aggregate them and spread them on campus.
