" “I am interested in listening to stories and believe in the power of listening. I believe that listening to each other can bridge the gap between different groups. In every experience of fieldwork, I enjoy getting in touch with the people I talk with and writing about their stories with my knowledge of Anthropology and Cultural Studies. I can't wait to experience more and write more after being one of the Millennium Fellows. " "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Unheard Voices in Shanghai Lockdown
Due to the current lockdown situation in Shanghai, many new “food deserts” appear. Because the infrastructure and industries vary in different districts and communes, residents in Shanghai have varioust food conditions and in most serious times, some residents, especially aging cummunities, migrant workers, and the floating population have little food and hardly receive governmental subsidies. Our project aims at making a “food desert” map by using ArcGIS through information collection. We will also plan to design a website that displays the “food desert” map, circulates scientific knowledge about food preservation in emergent times, and provides a platform that records Shanghai people’s stories with their food during the lockdown. We would like to use this website and “food desert” map to inform society of the emergency of constructing a sustainable food provision system. Also, with the display of people’s stories about food, we want to make a live archive that shows Shanghai residents’ agency in growing vegetables, creating new ways to preserve food, and voluntary assistance among neighbors and communities. Hunger is still an urgent issue even in a highly developed metropolis and through the project, we plan to emphasize the importance of food and the operation system when producing, delivering, and preserving food.
