" I'm excited to be a Millennium Fellow because of the various skills that I will learn which will later help me to achieve a bigger social impact. It's very important for us to understand why we conserve resources for the future generations and gaining more knowledge to able to explain this to other people is priceless. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: EcoSave

The ocean, which makes up 72% of the surface of the globe and is home to a wide variety of marine life, is the planet's life force. At least half of the oxygen we breathe comes from it, and it is essential for regulating our climate. They also contribute significantly to the global economy, which includes sectors like tourism, international shipping, and fisheries.
The ocean is currently dealing with several problems, one of which is plastic pollution. More than five trillion pieces of plastic waste are present in the water. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is also growing. To cut down on plastic pollution, immediate action is needed. We can all help by avoiding single-use plastics like straws, cutlery, and food containers. EcoSave thus focuses on SDG-14 (Life Below Water). This project aims to safeguard marine and coastal habitats from pollution and maintain them sustainably. We want to raise awareness among people about ways to keep our water bodies safe and clean in order to preserve biodiversity in Costa Rica, a country with many water bodies and a wealth of species.

About the Millennium Fellow

Lian Biar Kuoirot Deng is an ambitious agronomic engineering student at EARTH University in Costa Rica. As a young lady who has seen and experienced the disastrous consequences of poor leadership, she has been determined to seek opportunities that can groom her into a selfless and goal oriented leader. This led her to partake in activities like volunteering and addressing social challenges and injustices within her community in South Sudan. Having the opportunity to study in a sustainable university, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals have piqued her interest as they relate to her passion. She hopes to contribute towards achieving them in her university and country in the future.
