" Being a Millennium Fellow would allow me to expand my leadership skills. It will enable me to meet multiple people worldwide that share my same leadership goals and ambitions with Millennium. I hope to build my network and meet people who can help me ensure my project will be sustainable and be given advice. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Worth beyond the word

My Project will be educating individuals and departments on campus on the history of the word Retard/retarded, commonly used in western culture to negatively refer to individuals who have an intellectual or developmental disability, the effects of the word when used as a derogatory term toward individuals with an intellectual or developmental disability. I will also explain the importance of not using the word and the many setbacks the word can inflect on this community. With my events I will be hosting with Campus departments, we will hold a panel with Higher education professionals who have a background in special education, speak about the negative effects of the R-Word and why we should not use and in this panel, the students will ask questions about the word how it originated and how society has changed it meaning from medical to demeaning to an entire community. After my series of events, my aim is to have educated students on the importance of inclusion and not using the R-Word in their daily vocabulary.
