" "The Millennium Fellowship allows me to make real, meaningful, lasting change in an area that I am incredibly passionate about. It's so easy to feel helpless when it comes to environmental and sustainabilty problems and the Millennium Fellowship enables me to take charge. I am so excited to improve sustainabilty at my university as a Millennium Fellow." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Panthers Reducing Waste
We will have a multifaceted project with a few members in our group working on each part to acheive the highest efficiency with our time.
Part 1: Energy Waste
We will talk to and work with building managers to increase the temperatures in buildings on campus to save energy, money, and make it more comfortable for students and faculty, resulting in greater use of the facilities and getting more utility out of our current energy, making it efficient. We may produce a cost-benefit analysis for increasing temperatures in buildings to recieve manager's support.
Part 2: Clothing Waste
Create a “university closet” where students can bring their used, old, or new clothes and take different clothes at no charge to not only reduce clothing waste but also encourage reusing resources.
Part 3: Food Waste
Designate a space for a table in the university center for excess food from events so students and faculty have access to it for free instead of throwing it away after the event is over. This not only will potentially decrease student hunger but it will also educate people about the issue of food waste.
Part 4: Single-use waste
Place glass recycling bins on campus and partner with a company that will recycle the glass into sand. And /or work with faculty and student clubs who are currently in the process of eliminating unnecessary single use plastics on campus as they already have momentum and support.
