" "I am thrilled to be a Millennium Fellow, so I can create tangible progress in combating climate change starting at my college campus that radiates outward. I can take the skills I learn here to be a more effective advocate in my career." "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Panthers Reducing Waste: Food Waste

The Food Waste subgroup of Panthers Reducing Waste was intended to reduce food waste on Florida International University’s campus. With inspiration from community fridges in the Miami area, this project sought to combat food waste and insecurity by installing a fridge on campus. By having a fridge on campus, individuals can donate unopened food items that they are no longer interested in and that would otherwise go to waste. Rescuing these food items prevents waste and feeds food-insecure individuals.

About the Millennium Fellow

Maya Rylke-Friedman is a Florida International University Honors College member who is pursuing her degree in Social Work and minoring in International Relations. She is passionate about advocating for affordable housing and widespread access to basic necessities. She is the president of the Bubble City Community Project which addresses the needs of people who are homeless in the Miami area and advocates for affordable housing. She is also passionate about reversing the effects of climate change and combatting groups and industries that perpetuate it. She plans on joining the Peace Corps to assist people and nations that the West has subjugated with housing, community development, environmental solutions, and any way she can. She plans on being an active global citizen that advocates for justice, racial equality and equity, gender equality and equity, environmental justice, and more through her profession as a social worker. She also plans to establish her own non-profit that is multi-faceted as it focuses on mental health counseling, affordable housing, human-centric development (as opposed to car-dependent), eco-friendly solutions and advocacy, and widespread access to basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, clothes, etc.
