" "Sense of community and leadership is what drives me to study both Psychology and Political Science. Being a part of the Millennium Fellowship is an opportunity for me to connect more with my community and actively participate in its development; because I strongly believe in a better future for Haiti. I am happy and excited to meet other amazing leaders so we can work together and have a greater impact." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Between Feminism and History: Women in the Haitian Revolution
My project aims to educate people by incorporating the exploits of Haitian heroines into our history textbooks. I spent fourteen years studying in the Haitian school system, and now that I am in college, I realize that part of our history is hidden: the participation of women during the independence of Haiti.
I conducted a research project in which 30 participants who also studied in the Haitian school system completed an online survey. 58% of participants agreed that the heroines are not represented enough in our history textbooks. Additionally, 95% of them did not know about Grann Toya who led her indigenous army, or about Cecile Fatiman, a Vodoo priestess, who famously presided over the Bois- Caiman ceremony that ignited the Haitian Revolution. On the other hand, 95% of the participants were able to identify all the male heroes presented. More information on my research project can be found here: https://prezi.com/p/edit/x5mnzoamuku6/
I never had this image of brave, strong women fighting body and soul for freedom and illustrated on the same level as the male heroes. Haitian girls need to understand that they have the same abilities as boys to be successful in anything they want to do, even if sometimes society wants them to think otherwise. I want to use history as an empowering tool that reminds Haitian girls and women that they have the power to change the world and can be as courageous as the women who came before them.
