" “One of my favorite quotes from Mark Twain says that; a man with a new idea is a crank until that idea succeeds. I’m very optimistic that being a Millennium Fellow will imbibe in me the necessary skills required to work collaboratively and successfully in developing positive ideas in the society in line with UNAI principles and SDGs.” "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Assisting Small Scale Enterprises (ASSE)

Small Scale Enterprises as defined by the Central Bank of Nigeria since 1979 are business establishments whose annual turnover(sale figure) does not exceed five hundred thousand naira (#500,000) which is equivalent to $1,200. Examples of small scale Enterprises are; Catering Services(Indoor and Outdoor), Mobile food Vending, Computer Training Centre, Computer Repair and Accessories Sales, Mobile Phone Sales and Repairs, Rental Services, and Food Processing. In developing countries like Nigeria, these small scale industries are the lifeline of the economy and are generally labor intensive, so they create much employment. However, in our country today, this very important sector of the economy is almost neglected by the government.

Therefore, in this project of assisting Small Scale Enterprises, I plan to increase employment opportunities by providing financial assistance and innovative business plan to small scale business owners. I also plan to conduct training for individuals who want to engage in technical business such as computer or phone repairs. The financial aid plan will be achieved from funds voluntarily contributed by members of my team and I. I will also frequently visit and enlighten these business owners to form cooperative societies. Through these societies, government and bank loans will be accessible to them thereby increasing their financial strength, productivity and employment opportunities.

Again, I plan to continuously advocate the government to increase assistance rendered to small scale enterprises especially in making grants and loans accessible to them.

About the Millennium Fellow

Ogbuanya Victor Onyedikachi is a medical student at Federal University of Lafia, Nigeria.
Victor’s Community Service passion is inspired by the fact that he was born in the less developed part of his country, Nigeria which made it difficult for him to continue his education if not for a scholarship offered him during his high school on the back of his Academic prowess. As a result, Victor has decided to dedicate part of his life to helping people attain the peak of their careers and to provide his contribution in the Development of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
