Millennium Fellowship Project: Healthy Habit Hack @ HKU

Chronic diseases are a major public health problem worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, chronic diseases were attributed to 61% of all deaths and 49% of the global burden of disease in 2005. By 2030, its proportion of total global deaths will continue increasing to 70% and the global burden of disease to 56%. Despite the staggering statistics, four healthy lifestyle factors — healthy weight, regular exercise, healthy diet, and not smoking — when combined, can reduce up to 80% of the risk of developing the most common and deadly chronic diseases. Therefore, healthy lifestyles are indispensable for a sustainable community.
Healthy Habit Hack @ HKU is an initiative to promote healthy lifestyles, hence better health and well-being, through small habit changes in the HKU campus. The pilot project has two dimensions — consuming more nutritious options among packaged food, and drinking more pure water. In this stage, a social media challenge will circulate original educational materials to advocate for healthy lifestyle habits, while strategic partnership will be sought. In the future, Healthy Habit Hack @ HKU will resolve more dimensions and widen its coverage hopefully.
