Millennium Fellowship Project: SAGA Voluntary Work
The official name of the former is 星光SAGA(Starlight SAGA), a branch of Beyond the Pivot(BTP), which is a non-profit organization operated by HKU students. SAGA welcomes volunteers from different universities and cooperates with seven other non-profit organizations and four children's hospitals in mainland China. For instance, in each class, we have one headteacher who is responsible for contacting parents and teachers as well as giving general education classes (music, art...). Three teachers teaching Chinese, English, and Math. children are entirely out of school because of serious illnesses, have a weak constitution and may feel alienated from society, and whose families have a heavy financial burden. We hope that we like distanced stars, can enlighten these children's world a little bit, be their friends who can support them and exchange ideas with them and bridges to the outside world.
About the Millennium Fellow
Zhang Qinya, studying linguistics at the University of Hong Kong, is always on the way to the exploration of both the inner self and the world. Three years of being an online volunteer teacher facilitating patient children to better adapt to their future school life makes her realize the invisible barriers in the existing education system. At the same time, she also witnesses the contribution together made by attentive peers and believes it is possible for every individual to move a little step toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Goals (SDGs).
