" Leaders are like chameleons: the color of our leadership comes from those who are around us. I am a believer in the idea that learning is infinite. Through the Millennium Fellowship, I will get the chance to work with a diverse cohort of leaders who are passionate about changing the world. I am confident that through this experience, my leadership and base of knowledge will improve significantly. I am excited to discuss and collaborate on revolutionary ideas with students who wish to make the world a better place. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Creative Communication Solutions for Reproductive Health Outreach in Indigenous Populations

There is a significant shortage of health education available to indigenous communities that is inclusive of their cultural beliefs and difference in attitudes towards health and reproductive health specifically. In my project, I worked with the Center for Indigenous Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and gathered pertinent health information and statistics that were specific to AI/AN populations. The Center has this information collected but struggled to creatively communicate it to indigenous youth. Then, I created pamphlets that are appealing to youth and adolescents to distribute this information directly to health centers in reservations across the nation, specifically to two centers within Navajo Nation where reproductive health communications are sparse.

About the Millennium Fellow

Viveka Chinnasamy is a bright, driven and globally competitive pre-med student at Johns Hopkins University. With a passion for eliminating barriers to quality healthcare in underserved communities, Viveka is studying Public Health from a global standpoint. A true citizen of the world, she enjoys learning new languages and cultures in her spare time (she's on her 6th now!) and focuses on connecting on a deeper and cultural level with the populations she tries to help. Knowing medicine was her path from elementary school onwards, Viveka successfully launched her nonprofit, Medical Minds, which has served nearly 4000 individuals and 15 populations in need, addressing medical equipment shortages, access to mental health resources, financial support for children's surgeries in the US, catering to individuals with Alzheimer's and much more. She has thousands of hours of clinical experience and community volunteering and hopes to bring this dedication and commitment to her career as a philanthropist, physician, and leader. Viveka hopes to cultivate her current skillset, make invaluable connections, and bring her own perspectives and experiences to the table in promoting the United Nation's Sustainable Goals.
