" "There's no reason as to why i do what I do. I come from a place where I saw people suffer just for being themselves and were pushed down by the society just because they didn't fit the so called standards. I always had this urge to do something for them, for myself. Maybe it is the saviour complex or maybe this is what Rilke called "the heavy humanness." But being a MIllennium Fellow gives me a chance to do better, to do good, to bring change and just the thought that I can do something for my people makes me excited." "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Advancement of Rights of Marginalized Communities

Our university is based in a conflict zone that happens to be the world's most heavily militarized territory. With human rights violations being commonplace in Kashmir's theatre of war, civil rights are trampled upon frequently. This leaves the most disenfranchised groups in the valley particularly vulnerable to harm and injustice, at the hands of both the state and their fellow citizens. My project seeks to remedy that on a micro level by education and empowerment.

About the Millennium Fellow

Mukadas Fatima Khan is a creative, young law student at University of Kashmir, India. She was born and raised in Kashmir her homeland which she deeply loves. At young age she was very passionate about lot of things like writing and art but she soon realized that she lived in a place where women are looked down upon and so are artists and various other minorities. To have a respectful life in such a place needed her fight against the injustices around her. Fortunately the more she got older, the more technological advances were blooming in her dark homeland which led the majority of people realize their wrongs. However, a lot still remained.
Mukadas took steps, even though they were small, throughout her school and highschool which helped women and minorites. She is now of the age where her goals are bigger so she wishes and struggles to make them come true by helping these people and marganalized groups on bigger platforms like this one.
