Millennium Fellowship Project: H-First

Project description:
● Challenge - DISEASE BURDEN ON HEALTH SYSTEM OF PAKISTAN
According to statistics, Pakistan is facing a lot of burden on healthcare system due to
communicable as well as non-communicable diseases. This effect was particularly highlighted when the
pandemic arose, demanding attention to be given to the system of healthcare.
● Impact- why is DISEASE BURDEN a CHALLENGE
❖ ECONOMIC IMPACT
▪ - the cumulative health expenditure by federal and provincial govt went up by
14.35 % from 421.78b last year 2019-2020 to 482.27 billion in 2021-2022
▪ Budget getting inflated at high level.
▪ Clear indication of deterioration of health system if preventive steps not taken in
time.
❖ SOCIAL IMPACT
▪ Mental stress
▪ People keeping the diseased aloof
▪ Patients unable to fulfill their roles as member of society and as a member of
family
▪ Overall hierarchy of society getting disturbed
● Major diseases creating burden
❖ cancer 8%
❖ CVD 8%,
❖ tuberculosis 5%,
❖ diabetes 3%,
❖ hepatitis 7.6%
● OUR PROJECT – EMPHASIS ON NCDs (NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES)
● WHY NCDs - significant contribution
❖ Responsible for 58% deaths according to 2020 data
❖ 85% of disease burden on the country 2019 data
❖ Includes
▪ cancer,
▪ diabetes,
▪ COPD (10% includes emphysema and bronchitis)

WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM OUR PLAN?
We expect that imparting the knowledge to people, who normally have no idea about it, or those who
usually ignore it, will help to lessen the disease burden and spread on disease in the first place. The
health and lifestyle of people will improve and this will eventually lead to a better society

About the Millennium Fellow

Sanam Altaf is a competitive and young student of second year MBBS at King Edward medical university Lahore, Pakistan. She was born in a small village of okara sahiwal. Her phenomenal skills and plethora of knowledge broadened her thoughts to work for SDGs and create an impact on society. She now is actively contributing her part for making world a better place to live.
