" I think the only way to rebuild healthy communities after so much hardship is to come together as one united group. I believe being part of the Millennium Fellowship will help me become a better community member and leader, and connect me with people I can depend on to create with me a better world for all. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Friends of the Kaw

The Kansas River, colloquially referred to as "The Kaw," is a prairie-fed river stretching 173 miles from Junction City, Kansas into the Missouri River near Kansas City. The river supplies drinking water to roughly 800,000 Kansans and is the state's most popular river. Our project centers around partnering with a decades-old organization known as Friends of the Kaw to begin a project meant to preserve the health of the Kansas River by combatting the primary issues it currently faces: sand dredging, littering, pollution (especially non-point source pollution), the effects of climate change, invasive species, and inaccessibility. The Kansas River is extremely important, both from an ecological perspective and a cultural perspective, as it is very important to many of the indigenous peoples of the region. Maintaining the river's health and ensuring that all people have equal and sustainable access to its resources is vital, and we hope to keep the river safe for future generations.

About the Millennium Fellow

Eddie Church is a hardworking, passionate student studying Environmental Science at the University of Kansas. Born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas, they have felt a deep love and connection with nature since they were very young. The more they learned about environmental injustice, habitat destruction, and climate change, the louder their call to action seemed to become. Throughout high school and now in college, Eddie has always looked for opportunities to blend community engagement with environmental restoration, and has seen the healing affects it has on humans and nature alike.
