" "Working with people to learn and come together to make a difference has always excited me. Getting the opportunity to work amongst such an accomplished cohort exites me tremendously!
I am grateful for the people, opportunities and the privilege I've had in life to empower me enough to carry the cycle forward now. I hope that I can do justice to my passion for women's equality, empowerment and leadership by creating an impact through this Fellowship. " "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Tawwaqo
Afghan Refugees have seeked asylum in India for the last 15 years with the support of the UNHCR, and the numbers have only increased with time. A prominent part of the Afghan Refugee Community is situated in New Delhi. Due to a lack of documents, they have struggled to find work in the formal or informal sectors in order to sustain their livelihoods. Women, many who are widows, fled the country to protect themselves and their children but haven't been able to provide for their families adequately. They may have lived in India for some time, but their culture and Afghani Roots are still very rich, as is evident through some of the traditional products that are very exquisitely handcrafted and sold by them. Many women have also become tailors, designers, make up artists etc to earn for their families. While they are able to earn some money, the amount is still not sufficient, and the number of women being able to showcase their work is still very less. Through Project Tawwaqo (which means Hope), we want to create a platform for these women to carve their identities and empower themselves and each other. With the help of our privilege, network as young college students, and knowledge on creating a brand-through online and offline means, we want to create a name for the Afghan Women, that becomes well known in Delhi, in India and hopefully the world. We will be showcasing their multiple talents through various means- stalls, cultural events, awareness sessions, online fairs, Instagram businesses etc and also introduce more revenue streams and sustainable business models. This will introduce them to more people, thus increasing their incomes, and making them knowledgeable enough so that they can independently scale their businesses in the future; all while also elevating a platform for them to highlight the brutal struggles and trauma they have faced, and the difficulties they continue to face as they rebuild their lives. We also hope that through this project, our city (and our country) can become more aware of this very significant community that has lived in Delhi and more people can get involved to help uplift their lives. This will allow us to promote an inter-cultural dialogue between two very different, yet similar cultures and help citizens become more tolerant and empathetic towards the plight of a fellow community, to advocate for the betterment of their basic, fundamental rights as humans. We hope that through this Fellowship, we can get a better platform to raise this issue and amplify the work being done by these women, so that even after the Fellowship ends, we can continue to create more opportunities for the economic growth of these women, and their empowerment.
