" "To be provided with a platform to utilize one's skillset for the better good of the society with the opportunity to network with like-minded peers across the globe is an absolute honor. Only through diplomacy and solidarity can we establish an egalitarian society where a person's status by birth or circumstance does not restrict their upward mobility." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Defense Legal Aid
The increasing proportion of under trial prisoners in jails is a problem that has been highlighted over and over again. However, the root cause of this issue - bail jurisprudence that fails Criminal Justice objectives - has received less attention. Most studies done in this field is limited to prison conditions and demographics, not the bail procedure/subsequent events itself. This is a solution-focused comprehensive study that seeks to involve both state and non-state actors. It attempts to be comprehensive by extending the study to juvenile prisons and possibly, foreigners tribunal cases.
About the Millennium Fellow
Niranjana Biju is an undergraduate student at The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi (India). She is deeply moved by the rampant human rights violations worldwide and believes that international solidarity and diplomacy are the answers to a wide array of issues. Her life experiences have made her aware of intersectionality and its impact on an individual's experiences. As a Fellow, she acknowledges the same and strives to bring inclusivity while intending to pursue a career in law that provides her the platform to sufficiently represent the interests of the underprivileged.
