" Working with a vision, yields the greatest results. Being a Millennium Fellow will
definitely help me gain the right vision when working for the society. From the skills I acquire from this program I hope to streamline my action plan so that it will align with the UNSDGs. By God's grace I've always had a safe home to come back and rest after a day's activities. But I've seen those who don't have a proper home to sleep, work or play. This disturbing fact led me to work for this sustainable development goal in a neighbouring place. I hope to achieve this with the backing of a prestigious institution such as the UN. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Mission Shanthipuram

Mission Shanthipuram is a student driven project, backed by various groups, focusing on the transformation of Shanthipuram Colony of Ernakulam into a Township. There are several students working on various aspects like gender equality, digital literacy and increasing legal awareness. The project aims to sensitize the people about their rights and the various legal provisions avaliable to them with an aim to make them self-reliant and sustainable. The project aims to conduct various workshops and talks by bringing in activists and philanthropists. Our project focuses primarily on SDG Goal 4 focusing on quality education and increasing opportunities for the youth . The initial leg of the project would focus on making the youth of Shanthipuram more aware of the educational opportunities avaliable to them and helping them make an informed decision about their furture. By the end of the programme the project seeks to make the community more literate and empowered in a way that are aware of their rights and can now fight for what is rightfully theirs.

About the Millennium Fellow

Philip John is a socially active law student studying at the National University of
Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi. Born and brought up in the state of Kerala in India, he has always seen the problems that existed in his own society. Motivated by the love of Christ, he was always an active volunteer in many prestigious organisations such as the Junior Red Cross and Bharath Scouts. After selecting law as a career, he knew that his leaning towards social services was not mere coincidence but a deliberate choice. He wishes to work for the SDGs of Sustainable Cities and Communities in his neighbourhoods by collaborating with various organisations and individuals.
