" I am ecstatic to join the Millennium Fellowship because the program will provide me with the necessary tools and guidance I require to execute the project I have crafted so carefully, both in my thoughts and on paper. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Bunyaad

Bunyaad' is an Urdu word that means 'basic.' Project Bunyaad will seek to spread menstrual hygiene and reproductive rights information to women residing in rural areas in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Women in villages are often unaware of safe menstrual products and their use or the availability of contraceptives. These practices deter their health, an individual's fundamental right (hence the project's name). The project will also collect donations through bake sales at the NUST campus, and donation boxes will be set across campus along with posters about the aim of the project. These donations will then be used to purchase and distribute menstrual pads, cups, and contraceptives to women in rural areas. The notion 'my body my choice' is perceived negatively in Pakistan. This project will impart what the slogan means and how it has been misinterpreted. My body my choice in the context of this project, means women have the sole voice in the use of contraception during intercourse, and they can choose not to have children; it does not make them any less of women. The slogan also to me represents how women have a choice in choosing to use safe menstrual products instead of unhygienic ones, for instance, cotton pads, because after all, it is their body, and they wish to look after it. The project will also organize dialogues in rural areas to test the existing knowledge of menstruation practices and women's reproductive rights. Then, informative sessions featuring guest speakers will be organized to provide these women with additional information to close the gap between what they know and what they do, thereby enhancing the quality of health.
