Millennium Fellowship Project: Caught in the Middle: Analyzing the Impact of Migration Policy at the San Diego-Tijuana Border
As our cohort began to ponder what our research project could be, we looked internally and saw the perfect opportunity being a border community with San Diego, CA and Tijuana, Mexico. Our cohort asked the question, What is the experience of asylum-seekers at the San Diego-Tijuana border? Is there inequality in the immigration process? We chose the sustainable development goal (UNSDG) #10 of reducing inequality within and among countries. For our academic impact (UNAI) we focused on principle #7 which is Intercultural Dialogue, and commit to further learning about the injustices regarding the immigration process and what it is like for our migrant neighbors seeking asylum in the United States. This research seeks to explore how the Migration Protection Protocols (MPP) and Title 42, which allows the United States government to remove any person(s) who have recently been in a country where communicable disease is present, have affected the asylum seeking progress. Our research findings will address inequities under UNSDG 10 and how our work fostered stronger intercultural dialogue and ties within our border community.
