" My empathy and love for people and cultures drives me to know and care for those around me. I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it will open doors for me to continue to get to know and care about my neighbors. I am excited to continue to learn about different cultures and to help educate my peers on how to engage better with the border that is so near to us. I am excited to work with my team to create an impact in our community. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Caught in the Middle: Analyzing the Impact of Migration Policy at the San Diego-Tijuana Border

We see our project in two parts: research and campus education. The reserach component will be a hands-on cross-border research project that concretely advances the UN goal of reducing inequality within and between countries. Since we live so close to the US-MEX border, we are very interested in engaging with the cultural dynamics and realities at the border. We want to focus on development and analysis of migration policy in the immediate wake of the anticipated SCOTUS ruling on the Trump-Era "Remain in Mexico" policy. This research will include elite interviews with border patrol, NGOs and DHS officials, asylum seekers, and residents of Tijuana, Mexico.
The campus education component of our project would be in the form of a campus-wide forum or educational endeavor. We have several clubs on campus that we are interest in pairing with, such as our Ministry with Mexico program, ALAS (Latin American student association), MOSAIC (multi-cultural clubs), CJR (Center for Justice and Reconciliation) and the Point Weekly (our campus newspaper). We hope to educate our student body on the realities of the inequalities at the border through a creative, interactive means.
