" The Millennium Fellowship includes both research and education because good work is done when listen to the world around us and then share what we have learned with others. It has always been my hope that I delight in listening and learning. As a Fellow, I want my work to inspire both of these things, because I believe that from a posture of listening and learning, we can create real change. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Caught in the Middle: Analyzing the Impact of Migration Policy at the San Diego-Tijuana Border

Our project has two components, as it is both resarch-based and focused on campus education. Because we live near the border, our cohort wants to take adavnatge of this unique experince and conduct research specifically regarding migration policy. We plan to do research design in September, and then travel to the border in October. In San Diego and Tijuana, we plan to survey and interview asylum seekers, DHS officials, Border Patrol, NGOs, and residents of Tijuana. This will help us to collect informaton about the process of crossing the border, the experiences of border patrol and those seeking asylum, and the treatment of central americans living in Mexico as they wait to cross. After conducting research, we will spend november and december analyzing and presenting our results on campus. This will include partnering with various groups on campus such as the "Ministry with Mexico" team that plans border trips for students, different multicultural clubs, the Center for Justice and Reconcilliation, and the school newspaper. Because our cohort includes studenst from each of these groups, we feel we will be able to make a meaningful impact on campus. I personally will work with the school newspaper to write articles informing my peers about life at the border.

About the Millennium Fellow

Reyna Huff is a Journalism and Women's studies student at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. She is passionate about storytelling, and her primary intrests focus on issues surrounding gender inequality. As someone who has lived in different places both in the US and outside of the US, reconcilling and appreciating differences among diverse groups of people is important to her. Through her project, she hopes to learn to be a better listener to her neighbors at the San Diego-Tijuana border. She hopes that through careful research, time spent at the border, and truthful storytelling, she will be able to help reconcile differences between those seeking asylum and those living in the US.
