" I want to develop the Sustainable Development Goals beacause I believe that all of us carry within us a tint of energy and motive that is enough to transform our world and make it a better place. An estimated one-third of people with major depression also have an alcohol problem. While most people will experience highs and lows throughout their life, clinical depression lasts for weeks, months and sometimes even years. It interferes with a person’s entire life, including their ability to work and maintain a healthy lifestyle. For those struggling with depression who feel there is no end in sight, drugs and alcohol may sometimes appear to be an easy solution to their problems. These substances can temporarily subside any emotional pain and bring about a sense of happiness but eventually lead to a lifetime of suffering. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: BRINK.

Drug addiction is a global phenomenon; but it is an overwhelming problem in Punjab and nearby northern Indian states. Various surveys by WHO and the apex institutions of the country reveal higher prevalence of drug addiction in this area. It is adversely affecting the health of the youth, harmony in the family and well being of the society and is increasing the crime statistics of the state. The magnitude of the problem is so grave that it is destroying the very fabrics of the society. The relationship between the two disorders is bi-directional, meaning that people who misuse substances are more likely to suffer from depression, and vice versa. People who are depressed may drink or use drugs to lift their mood or escape from feelings of guilt or despair. But substances like alcohol, which is a depressant, can increase fatigue, affecting concentration, inhibitions, decision-making and reaction times. The relationship between the two disorders is bi-directional, meaning that people who misuse substances are more likely to suffer from depression, and vice versa. People who are depressed may drink or use drugs to lift their mood or escape from feelings of guilt or despair or the vice versa in the vicious cycle. My project BRINK, under SDG 3, is to analyze the neurological pathophysiology between depression and substance addiction in the state of Punjab. I am trying to form a correlation of neural pathway metareactions and spreading awareness amongst the community.
