" Being a Millennium Fellow will take our efforts to a larger scale. The Fellowship can provide legitimacy to our work and encourage more people to collaborate with us in our quest to segregate waste at the source. We will receive training as part of this Fellowship which I am really looking forward to because it will help us take the project to the next level. The Fellowship will also be useful for the project as it will expand our connections with other Fellows working on similar projects. Climate change is a global problem and recycling non-biodegradable waste will be useful in a real sense only when done on a large scale. The connections will help us in taking this project to a national and international level. We will also be able to provide help and support to other Millennium Fellows by connecting with their projects. I am very excited to make these connections. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Segregation at Source
The project comprises of 3 steps. The project will start at our own college campus and will be later expanded to other schools, colleges and offices. The 3 steps are as follows-
1. Segregation of waste: We will provide for segregated bins to collect dry recyclable waste. At present, we are collecting non-biodegradable dry recyclable waste on a weekly basis.
2. Awareness sessions: We will conduct awareness sessions to inform the general public on how they can effectively use the waste segregation system. E- waste management will also be taught. In these sessions, we will also explain to the audience how, and to what extent the climate change issue is a huge threat to the world in today's time and that immediate action is essential.
3. Connecting to recycling organisations: There are several organisations working on recycling non-biodegradable waste. We will connect the institutions we work with to these organisations, so that the waste collected in the segregated bins is collected by them. Currently, we have connected with a recycling organisation based in NOIDA to take the recyclable waste collected in our campus.
About the Millennium Fellow
Mridula Trivedi is a dedicated, climate-oriented, law student at Symbiosis Law School, NOIDA, India. She believes that as a member of the society who is privileged with good education and resources, it is her responsibility to give back to society in every way possible. Her experiences changed her perspective toward climate change over the years. But she knows that people can bring unconventional results only if they are passionate about something. Therefore she is extremely passionate about her waste segregation project and strongly believes that if people introduce sustainable practices in their everyday lives, the planet can be saved from a major climate crisis.
