" Michelle Obama once said "instead of letting your hardships and failures discourage or exhaust you. Let them inspire you" being a Millennium Fellow will afford me not only this opportunity but also the chance to bring positive change to the lives of people in my community. The Fellowship will impart in me skills that will allow me to do the work efficiently and in a way that will ensure lasting impact and will allow me to grow as a leader in service of others. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Legal Therapy Africa
A photographer James Nachtwey quoted " decisions should be made according to our highest values, not our lowest. I have learned the value of tolerance, respect and courage. Sometimes they are necessary to face the enemy." In this same spirit so should we face our adversaries in a court of law or any other applicable dispute resolution mechanism.
For far too long we have seen conflict tear families apart and leave children broken and traumatized. These families are put through a rigorous adversarial system, at what is most likely one of the most difficult time of their lives, with no care for their mental well being.
over the years, Alternative dispute resolution mechanisms have come up, to solve this very problem. However, I believe as a society we can take a step further and make dispute resolution a healing process, a saving grace for people. A process that seeks to uphold the dignity of the parties and resolve disputes according to their highest principles and resolve their conflict from a more holistic point of view.
Legal therapy Africa is focused on transforming the dispute resolution process into a healing journey rather than a system where disputants are desolate through out and after the process.
The organization works together with therapists and advocates to realize this goal. The disputants attend three sessions of therapy per week, this will help the disputants navigate their emotions and consequently enabling them to make quality decisions based on their highest values and not their lowest and preserving the dignity of both parties.
Furthermore, the sessions will explore the parties' financial situation, their social situation, their family situation, their emotional and mental status.
This will then enable the advocate to sought out appropriate reliefs from the court and/or the appropriate body, that are tailored to the disputants as a whole. Hence, upholding justice.
