Millennium Fellowship Project: Going Climate Action
On November 11, 2022, the Millennium Fellowship University of Abuja held her Social Impact Project Tour on SDGs 13 Climate Action visiting secondary schools in Gwagwalada FCT Abuja. The Social Impact Project tour "GOING CLIMATE ACTION" aims to promote climate change awareness campaigns, enlightenment, and advocacy.
This comes at a time when the world is grappling with the negative consequences of climate change on the environment, particularly in Nigeria. The Climate Change Project Impact on School and Community chose the United Nations-organized Global Climate Change Conference COP27 in Egypt.
The School Social Impact Project Tour was part of the obligations for the UN Millennium Fellows Class of 2022 to create Group Social Impact Project Tour to contribute to UN SDGs Program to the community and school for social impacts.
Amb. Casmir Nnamani Millennium Fellows Campus Director at the University of Abuja Nigeria coordinated the Social Impact Project tour #GoingClimateAction.
They educated and enlightened the students with 100 numbers on what climate change is, how it affects people, how to combat climate change mitigation, adaptation, and some greenhouse gas GHG that causes emissions, and the importance of planting trees and waste recycling. The Fellows presented some of the Climate Action Study materials to the school.
The trip culminated in the planting of Site lights and Economic Trees in the School Compound, which will serve as Shelterbelts, capturing carbon emissions around the School Compound.
The Principal of the School, Christ Academy International School appreciated the Millennium fellows from the University of Abuja on their Project which she believes has impacted more Students and School Students may not have known about Climate Change and Climate Action of the UN as it contains in SDG13.
The Campus Director of Millennium Fellows of the University of Abuja, Nigeria Amb.Casmir Nnamani who is also a climate Activist thanks the Principal and School for the ample opportunity given to them to educate the Students on Climate Change.
The project is a continuous project that will still hold the Next year 2023 at the University of Abuja Main Campus to enlighten the students of the University of Abuja, Abuja Nigeria on the Climate Change Emergency and how they can be Changemakers to global goals for Mitigation and Adaptation for Climate Change. The Millennium Fellow from University has procured a Site-light tree to be planted in the University community which will serve as the Shelterbelt for students and the Tapping of Carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases in the Atmosphere.
The project also looks to train the Youth, men and women in the community on how to use Agriculture waste and other waste materials to produce Charcoal bricket, local method of Converting Waste to Charcoal which is Clean Cooking safe for our environment, as Clean Stove initiative, this aimed to discourage them from cutting of trees
for firewood, they are used to making of
Charcoal production.
All this can be achieve with proper funding available and Sponsorship.
About the Millennium Fellow
Okwori Isaiah Abowoicho is currently a Microbiology Undergrad at the University of Abuja, Nigeria. As a Microbiologist, his utmost priority is to drastically deteriorate the activities of pathogenic microorganisms which poses severe threat to the well being of the general public. He is also very zealous and keen on imparting the society through mentoring and equipping young ones with fundamental tools that would influence positively their perspectives on core societal values as well as inspire their minds toward creativity, and valid innovations. He hopes to achieve this milestone through constant learning, research and innovations.
