" "I'm excited to be a Millennium Fellow because of the opportunity to connect with a global community of individuals who are taking action to achieve local and meaningful change. The Fellowship encourages the type of collaboration and moral support that we as students need in order to maintain a sense of optimism and sustainably engage in our work towards a liveable future. It serves as a reminder that we are not alone." "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Green2Go

By establishing a university chapter of Green2Go at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder), I aim to accelerate the transition to a zero-waste world and pursue SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production. Green2Go is a nationwide, student-run organization that provides free resources, information, and a foolproof process to help universities make a complete switch from single-use to reusable take-out containers in dining halls. CU Boulder allows takeout food at “Grab-n-Go” locations and currently uses single-use compostable or recyclable takeout containers, which contribute to dramatically higher GHG emissions, material waste, energy consumption, and financial costs than reusable containers. Therefore, switching from single-use to reusable takeout containers, with the help of Green2Go’s network of 50+ universities that have adopted the program, will allow our campus dining services to save money and take tangible climate action. Further, CU students will have a convenient and reliable way to take out their food while also reducing their carbon footprint.

About the Millennium Fellow

Sophie Kvaratskhelia is a second-year student at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she is double-majoring in Molecular Biology and Environmental Studies with a minor in Spanish. Since she was young, Sophie was taught to have a deep appreciation for nature, which has had a strong influence on her drive to learn about and push for sustainability within her community. She is currently the Chair of her university’s Environmental Board, which works to make CU Boulder greener and more socially responsible through advocacy and policy changes. In her free time, Sophie loves to read and try new cooking recipes.
