UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT BENJAMIN JOSEPH HODGSON, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2022.
University of California Davis | California, United States | Advancing SDG 11 & UNAI 9
" The Millennium Fellowship willprovide me with the support of similarly-passionate peers, and we would work together to improve our community. I believe the structure of the Fellowship and the teamwork that it fosters will allow me and other Fellows to direct the campus towards a more sustainable future. At each stage in my life, I have worked to improve my community – the Millennium Fellowship will facilitate my work for my current community at Davis. I want to connect with other Fellows – we will inspire each other to continue our work at Davis and beyond. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Sustainable Landscaping on Campus
Our project is working to replace underused grass lawns on our university campus with more water efficient landscaping. This project addresses SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. In California, water is scarce and efficient usage is required in ongoing drought conditions. Our short term goal is to select and convert one site to drought-tolerant landscaping. In the future, we would like to replicate this process in other locations around campus to further decrease the total water usage.
About the Millennium Fellow
I am passionate about climate action. I believe that we should use policies to combat climate change as a vehicle to create a more just world. Climate change is a consequence of many different human systems interacting, and this intersection provides an opportunity to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. By changing these systems, we can both combat climate change and achieve the SDGs. I feel an obligation to pursue a better world. I am indebted to my community at all scales – local, national, and international – and I believe that I could pay my good fortune forward by committing to a career that combats climate change. Beyond any external obligations I feel, I want my life to have meaning. I feel most fulfilled when working towards something larger than myself, and climate change is a world-spanning crisis that desperately needs to be addressed. I would like to leave the world better than I found it and working to mitigate and adapt to climate change will improve quality of life for people all around the world. I believe that committing my professional life to climate action will contribute to a fulfilling life.
