Millennium Fellowship Project: Participatory Life Cycle Assessment in Lithium Valley

Lithium is a critical material in electric vehicle batteries, but the broader public good of energy transitions must be balanced with the environmental burdens on material-producing regions. I work with a doctoral student, Margaret Slattery, on her dissertation project “Incorporating stakeholder perspectives in industrial ecology: A justice-oriented analysis of the lithium-ion battery value chain.” The project focuses on a lithium extraction project in the Salton Sea region of southern California, coined “Lithium Valley” for its underlying lithium-rich geothermal brines. The project aims to identify and contextualize local impacts by developing a participatory consequential life cycle assessment model of proposed direct lithium extraction. I am thus constructing a process model to translate to environmental impact categories, which will be selected through community engagement.
