" "I am very excited to be a Millennium Fellow as the platform will allow me to connect with and learn from other changemakers worldwide, exchange ideas, develop leadership, and have the resources to help advance disability accessibility with my current and future projects." "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Neurodivergent-Inclusive Higher Education

Led by an autistic student with ADHD, the project "Neurodivergent-Inclusive Higher Education" recognises that current environments in higher education are often inaccessible for autistic and otherwise neurodiverse students, whether it is marking schemes based on social participation, event accessibility issues, or overwhelming campus spaces. These barriers might lead to salient problems with mental health and a much higher likelihood of them dropping out compared to their non-neurodivergent peers, further contributing to existing social issues like the disability employment gap and a lack of social opportunities. While special education and other specialist support have been introduced to help with this issue, they are often not led by neurodiverse people or include them in their aim and design. So, with the intention to contribute to the U.N. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 of Quality Education, the "Neurodivergent-Inclusive Higher Education" project hopes to involve neurodiverse students in making higher education inclusive for themselves. We aim to hear from neurodiverse students through surveys and interviews about their thoughts and use these to create a petition of policy suggestions for authorities to consider and for anyone reading and signing it to know how education can be more accessible. The project will first be launched in London before expanding to cover broader populations.

About the Millennium Fellow

Suzanna Chen is a Chinese-Canadian student enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) programme at University College London (UCL) in the U.K. As a person of colour with disabilities, Suzanna is passionate about inclusion and equality for disabled and otherwise marginalised people in all walks of life. Through her project, she hopes to involve neurodiverse students around her in making a practical difference toward accessibility in education. Her studies concern mainly social sciences, but she hopes to focus on disability studies towards the end of her bachelor's or for a master's degree to match her passion.
