Millennium Fellowship Project: Hinsure

PROJECT REPORT

Name: Project Hinsure
Location: Bodija Market, Ibadan.
Date: 19th November 2022
Time: 8:00 am -11:00 am

By 8:00 am on the 19th of November 2022, Millenium Fellows COMUI 2022 and volunteers gathered at MRS filling station, Bodija Market to discuss the outreach that was slated for that day.

The project was the Hinsure project, aimed at creating awareness to traders and natives in the local community of Bodija, Ibadan, on the benefits of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The National Health Insurance Scheme in Nigeria, is a project created by the Nigerian government to provide health care services to all citizens, workers of the government and non workers at a discounted fee.

The outreach was directed at people who were non-workers of the government due to the observed ignorance that most natives had on the subject.

The National Health Insurance scheme covers the registered individual's medical care costs for the whole of the year on a deposit of a sum of N15,000. The individual can as well register dependants and relations who have to pay the same amount to receive same service. The insurance scheme is designed so that the registered individual will have access to free medical check-up and consultations, free medical care, discounted drugs of up to 90% as well as free surgery as long as it is under provision by the scheme.

The outreach started by 9am and members of the Project team went about in groups of two to talk to people about the existence of the scheme as well as it’s benefits. Fliers containing the call lines of the nearest NHIS office in Ibadan were shared to them in case they needed further clarifications and intended to register.

In the course of the discussion of group members with natives, we realised that,

· A large number of people had never heard about the NHIS scheme

· Some people had heard about the NHIS Scheme, but did not know all the benefits that they had to gain by registering.

· Some people knew about the benefits of the NHIS scheme but were reluctant to spare their time to go get registered.

. A very few number of people knew about the scheme and were already registered.

We took the opportunity to persuade the people to get registered on the scheme, explaining the privileges which are available to beneficiaries of the scheme. We also let them know that the deposit of N15,000 which made up the registration fee was to be paid to the government, and the fee affords them an access to a whole year of free health care. We answered questions and directed people to the office at Ikolaba, the nearest office for registration for the NHIS Scheme.

About 109 persons were reached by the 12 Fellows and volunteers.
