Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Better Life
Project Better Life is aimed at creating awareness on breast cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women in the world. We engaged various communication channels to educate people on the importance of early dectection of cancer and the adoption of better health-seeking behaviours to improve outcomes of women who come down with breast cancer.
We shared online posters on Twitter and Whatsapp, featured on 3 radio shows, visited a secondary school to interact with young girls and held a physical walk tagged the Pink Walk For Life during which we interacted with women and shared handbills in English and Yoruba.
In addition, we provided free breast screening services to underserved women in a local community.
About the Millennium Fellow
Sophia Okeke is an enthusiastic and goal-oriented medical student of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria passionate about social impact through volunteering. It's been projected that annual cancer deaths in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) could reach 1 million by 2030, nearly double the 520,000 deaths that occurred in 2020. Through her project, Sophia hopes to contribute meaningfully to SDG 3 : Good health and well being by increasing cancer awareness in rural communities and encouraging early presentations at health care centres in Nigeria; thereby reducing cancer mortality in Nigeria.
