Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta | Abeokuta, Nigeria | Advancing SDG 5 & UNAI 2
" Being concerned about the lack of quality childhood education and gender inequality in rural areas, I would like to be a solution to this problem and advocate for change in my community.
I believe the Millennium Fellowship will develop me into an ethical and impactful leader by connecting me with mentorship, networking, training and funding opportunities. Being a Millennium Fellow will equip me with the tools, information and opportunities needed to change systems that exclude children from learning and enhance gender inequality. This will also consolidate my development as regards quality education and gender equality such that I will be able to have access to skills, trainings and resources of education advocacy and financing and will be given an opportunity to break cycles of inequality. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Girls Lead
The Girls Lead project is a joint project which will be lead by Ogunkeye Inioluwa and Fagbenro Busola. The Girls Lead project addresses the Sustainable Development Goal 5. This project serves as a call to action for radical social change to tear down barriers of prejudice and discrimination that hold girls down. It aims to identify gender stereotypes and debunk myths of gender equality that hinders equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities for girls in secondary schools. Through this project, the girls will be exposed to and will be able to identify various patriarchal norms that affect their lives and they'll see reasons why these norms should not define or shape them. They'll understand that they can be a voice and take up meaningful roles that affect the shaping of their identities and of generations to come. This means that the passion for transformative change will be infused in them through this program.
The project will be carried out on the International Day of the Girl Child. The 2022 International Day of the Girl Child focuses on the investment in girls' rights. Girls continue to confront lots of challenges to fulfill their potential. The ability of girls to face these challenges shows their tenacity and resilience which means there's an ability, and this ability can be channeled into being change makers - tackling these challenges or external threats, instead of settling for them. When change makers are raised, the global gender gap can be bridged.
It aims to reach out to 400 girls in 3 High Schools in Ibadan, Oyo state. A South Western state in Nigeria.
At the end of the program, the girls will:
• Become enlightened about gender equality and how they can achieve this, starting with their immediate communities.
• Understand the constraints posed by gender stereotypes on themselves as individuals, their community, and the world.
• Come to understand their self worth and see themselves as individuals to be celebrated.
• Develop tolerance, empathy, a capacity for ethical decision-making, and a commitment to contributing towards a greater good which is Gender equality.
