Millennium Fellowship Project: Hygiene Plus Project
on: Hygiene PLUS is a community health Education and promotion project that targets teenagers. It aims to help teenagers understand the changes that occur in their bodies at the onset of puberty, how to respond to these changes and to help them develop good hygiene practices. They will also be educated about positive body image and how to identify behaviors that put them at risks for contracting sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs).
Needs Assessment: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) aims to ensure health lives and promote well-being for all ages. ICAL wants to contribute its quota by helping teenagers understand ways of safeguarding their sexual and reproductive health.
Personal hygiene for teenagers is key in preventing both communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases as well boosting confidence and self –esteem in that critical age group.
According to health experts, period poverty is major reason girls routinely miss school. In a conservative Country like ours, it is important to have conversations about personal and menstrual hygiene. This will no doubt eliminate barriers to menstrual hygiene.
Many teenagers have become victims of rape and abuse and do not know how to seek help. Most interventions are usually targeted at girls and boys are often neglected. These issues soon manifest as mental health disorders such as depression and suicide. ICAL seeks to educate teenagers on how to identify and protect themselves from sexual predators.
