Millennium Fellowship Project: Roll Back Alcoholism
Alcoholism, also known as Alcohol use disorder is a chronic disease caused by addiction to alcohol, leading to a deterioration in the health and social functioning of an individual.
In Nigeria, alcohol is the sixth leading risk factor contributing to most death and disability and the alcohol-attributable deaths in both sexes for liver cirrhosis, road traffic accidents, and cancer recorded in 2016 was 42,120; 15,365 and 4687 respectively.
This initiative therefore seeks to promote the Sustainable Development Goal 3: good health and well-being, with target 3.5 as the focus which is: "Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol"
This project aims at increasing awareness on the dangers and pathological effect of alcoholism among students and youths in order to raise advocates. This will be achieved through health seminars on Alcoholism, online sensitization and public campaigns. Informative brochures and proper counselling sessions to help youths already addicted will be provided.
We will also collaborate with a rehabilitation and psychology clinic so as to refer alcohol addicts for follow-up and to be properly helped.
