communication skills, create networking opportunities where I get to work with like minded people and belong to the cohort of global change makers. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Students Mental Health Advocates

Students Mental Health Advocates is a platform birthed out of the need to attend to the mental health of students within the university community. WHO estimates that fewer than 10 percent of mentally ill Nigerians have access to the care they need. This also applies to students within the campus community. Quite a several students within
the community have gone through one mental illness or the other but have no one they could speak up to or no campus student group they could express themselves to. SMA comes to fill the gap. The Students Mental health advocates is dedicated to educating, providing support and creating awareness on the mental health of students within the university community.

About the Millennium Fellow

Ruth Ikani is a third year cell biology and genetics student at the University of Lagos. She is passionate about promoting Mental Health. She has deep awareness of the stigma surrounding mental health and its impact on people battling mental illnesses and this drives her to educate, correct the misconceptions that exist around Mental health and fight for an increased openess in topics around Mental health.
Through her project, Ruth hopes to create a support group that raises awareness and allows students to be free to express themselves, share experiences and receive the appropriate help.
