" The future belongs to the ones who grab and make good use of the opportunities in the present. I dream of a world where we will not open our televisions in our living rooms and see our brothers and sisters die of hunger. I dream of food secure nations and Yes, Millennium Fellowship will act as a pivotal point to effect change in the food security sector. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Twende Shule Initiative

Twende Shule Initiative (TSI) is a Group Project initiated by the Millennium Fellowship Class of 2022 Fellows from the University of Nairobi CAE Cohort.

It is geared towards ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all and in turn achieve SDG 4 – Quality Education.

Due to the onset of the Free Primary Education Programme, 2003, public schools faced an unprecedented surge in enrolment numbers and thus overwhelming the current infrastructural facilities in these schools with a certain school having only four latrines serving over 600 pupils.

The project therefore strives to have built and upgraded education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, non-violent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all.

Our aim to raise awareness through advocating for these reforms on the various social media platforms. We will engage with the public on these platforms, educated and share ideas, that will have the sole purpose of advancing this goal. We are aiming to gather a following of about a 500 people across all platforms during the Millenium Fellowship Period (August-December 2022).
We also aim to partner with the relevant stakeholders: National Government, Foundations and School Heads(Administration) to ensure that students and faculty altogether are able to access basic services: electricity, internet, computers, adapted infrastructure and materials for students with disabilities, basic drinking water, single-sex basic sanitation facilities and basic hand washing facilities.

Our main target are schools in marginalized poverty stricken areas. However, we are currently working to ensure public schools in our University’s vicinity have met the conditions. By 2025 we look forward to having a achieved at least 80% of the set goals.

About the Millennium Fellow

Javan Joshua Ayieko is a young energetic positive-minded person who is currently in his 3rd year pursuing Bachelor of science in Environmental and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Nairobi. I am enthusiastic about matters pertaining food and nutrition security and I always usually spend my free time researching and reading articles on the same.In a fast changing world and an increase in population, it is only prudent that we take care of our environment and do our farming right so that we may produce enough food to keep us alive and kicking. This is where Javan draws his daily drive, with a dream to be a member of a bigger team with the same passion to curb food insecurity. Needless to say, Javan is also a chess fanatic and a great supporter of Manchester United.
