" Teamwork, self belief and creativity.Having to tap into my mind and confidently pitch ideas would be a worthwhile start both to myself and to my team. Self belief is directly tied to creating social impact, that even though it may be difficult to do so, it isn't un doable. Creativity can be applied in new ideas, existing systems or as a way of incorporating structure. The skills I will gain from the Millennium Fellowship will assist in using my voice for all forms of social impact both today and in future. Additionally, it will make me more in tune with others.Leadership is about service and focusing on oneself is not the end goal, rather the community at large. I am more than willing to learn and increase my skills and competence in this learning process. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Extraordinary patterns
Extraordinary patterns is a project by Millenium fellow Wangechi Gathitu addressing the plight of neurodivergence and its ties to potential mental illnessin adulthood. My lens of approach is an Anthropological one because through understanding context, one can be able to see through patterns and understand why a certain observation manifests as so. This project therefore aims to interact with the youth, giving a glimpse into their childhood, and finding the pitfalls that emerged through interaction with the adults in their life as well. This will offer a potential room for discussion that will foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for these unique individuals. Finally, it offers a voice for these who fall under the spectrum.

Joan has been passionate about social impact for human beings and the environment alongside improving existing systems in order to make them more effective. This is a challenge that particularly faces developing countries and even if 1 person can try and make a difference in a system,it is worth more than anything. This drive, coupled by ever versatile and holistic Anthropological and world knowledge has offered new perspectives and has turned a dream into reality through dedication. As she is always willing to learn, challenges that proved to execute from scratch can now be achieved. What is most important is that learning never ends.Joan aspires to be in afield where her acquired anthropological skills can be effective as well as encouraging her to be more confident in pitching ideas. This will allow for present and future growth as an individual and that of a team player.
