" My art and my work are driven by systems thinking, innovation, and adaptability. Collaboratively improving these talents will be a benefit of joining the Millenniums Fellowship. My social impact on school and artistic communities will be more measurable thanks to the skills I gained during the Millennium Fellowship and will be more in line with UNAI's guiding principles and the Sustainable Development Goals. By imagining fresh approaches to creativity and learning, I can't wait to improve my anticipatory ability. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Spear of African Peace (SoAP)

Executive Summary
In the internally displaced person’s camp near Malakal town in Central Upper Nile State, South Sudan, a humanitarian worker looks sadly at a photo on his mobile phone. The picture isn’t much to look at – a tattered white rope hanging from the grass-thatched roof of a typical South Sudanese home. The rope was used by a 13-year old boy who hung himself. He felt life has nothing much to offer him. The boy ended his life thinking his parents could no longer support him while in the displacement camp and he felt trapped, helpless. Many refugees in the world represent these traumatic and painful experiences, and yet still very little has been done to resolve it. Spear of Africa Peace is a refugee based project that recognizes art and storytelling as a therapy to help refugees deal with the trauma they faced. The foundation of The Spear of African Peace (SoAP) utilizes the art of storytelling as a catalyst for change through productive discourse. SoaP's main activity is a yearly therapeutic essay contest that not only acts as a soul-mending safe space for sharing the - often traumatic - personal experiences of the East African refugees. Through economic avenues, art and storytelling via online channels, SoAP aims at transforming the livelihood of refugees both in urban and rural settings across the East Africa region.
We foster deep friendship and solidarity with like-minded others from zones of conflict across East Africa. Our essay winners become lifelong members and a highly engaged national community, which exposes them to new opportunities and friendship across borders. Winners are from warring countries who start as awkward finalists. They leave our two days' ceremony as close friends with a mutual resolve to make peace between their peoples.
