" My work in menstrual equity empowers me to end period stigma and inspire others to think of periods not as a gross, unclean process, but as a social justice issue intersecting many societal problems, including poverty, race, and health. I love opening up people's minds through storytelling; the Millennium Fellowship will provide me with the tools needed to make my voice heard on a greater scale. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Menstrual Health Education Program

The Menstrual Health Education Program consists of 5 comprehensive workshops to give students in the Workshop School in West Philly a strong foundation in menstrual health. This curriculum was created in partnership with the students, who were most interested in learning about how to take care of their period, period-related disorders, gender-inclusive periods, and period stigma.

A typical workshop lasts one hour. The first 15 minutes consists of check-in’s with the students, which provide them with space to decompress and be supported by others. The facilitator then sets norms, such as confidentiality and freedom to leave if needed, and presents a 30 minute presentation about the topic, during which participants could ask questions. This presentations are highly interactive, including elements like show-and-tell of different kinds of menstrual products and having participants share their period stories. The last 10-15 minutes consist of a group discussion to reinforce the concepts covered. This would be an open forum for a diversity of views on the topics discussed in the workshop, many of which are difficult to talk about (e.g. racial disparities in medicine, the period experiences of non-cis people). The facilitator would guide this discussion to ensure that all participants are respected while encouraging deep, critical thinking.
