Millennium Fellowship Project: Shelter Health Outreach Program (SHOP)

The biggest health barrier for most low-income Philadelphians is the lack of access to affordable, high-quality primary care. After working throughout this year at homeless shelters in Philadelphia providing blood pressure screenings and health checkups to individuals without a home, I learned from our conversations the specific barriers they each face to accessing adequate care. My project creates an easier and more efficient way for homeless and under-resourced Philadelphians to access primary care. The first aspect is the establishment of a network of free clinics in all neighborhoods throughout the city that are willing to provide primary care consultations at free or low costs to those that need it. I am currently working on building partnerships with health centers around Philadelphia that are willing to participate in this program. The second aspect is a hotline staffed by myself and fellow students at the University of Pennsylvania. Philadelphians seeking access to care can call this hotline at any time, and the staff on the hotline will guide the caller through the entire process of scheduling an initial appointment with one of the dozens of free clinics around the city with which I’m working on establishing partnerships with. After scheduling this initial appointment, callers can continue accessing the hotline for any help they need, including obtaining transportation to their appointment, getting a guide on how to convey their symptoms to their doctor, and accessing medications they need at a pharmacy after their appointment. When my project is completed, homeless and otherwise underserved Philadelphians will finally have a friendly helping hand to get them the affordable primary care they need, and a guide to take them through the whole process over the long-term.
