" “Sustainability and Urban Ecology are linked through the altruistic efforts of humans. As we shape a better community for others, we are developing a more biodiverse hearth for all organisms. The Millennium Fellowship will help drive this combined effort of social and ecological responsibility through creativity and collaboration at my university.” "

Millennium Fellowship Project: JGHC Community Garden and Course

The JGHC Community Garden is a Non-profit organization founded in August 2021 and based in the Tampa Bay Area at the University of South Florida Tampa Campus. Our mission is to share the global experience of food sovereignty by implementing it here in our own backyard! We grow our own food and donate it to local food pantries while building a community of USF students and volunteers to learn about sustainable agriculture and healthy food. Our lessons are taught from seed to plate!

About the Millennium Fellow

Kobe Phillips is a curious researcher studying Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of South Florida. His main interests are rooted in Eco-immunology, Network Biology, and Epigenetics. Kobe is passionate about building community and creating a sustainable urban ecology. Using honeybees as symbols for collective altruism, Kobe founded the JGHC Community Garden to rekindle students’ connection to food and nature. Kobe also created “Rooted in Place,” a service-learning course at his university to teach food sovereignty and urban ecology through hands-on learning. Kobe hopes to pursue a PhD in Community Ecology to expand on his efforts in global sustainability.
