" How do you create a sustainable world? Start with your community! By designing a greenhouse and water catchment system for a community garden, my team will allow hundreds of people to produce their own food and learn how to use less inputs in a traditionally extractive industry! "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Community Greenhouse

I teamed up with USF's Engineers without Borders club to design and build a greenhouse for a local community garden.

The greenhouse’s primary purpose is to provide a space to sprout plants. The structure will prevent animals from eating the saplings as well as protecting them some shelter from the Florida sun. Additionally, a central location will make it easier to water. Another function of the greenhouse is that it will divert rainwater into two storage tanks that could be used to irrigate the rest of the garden.

We hope that an exciting new structure will encourage residents to make use of the garden and even bring plants home.

This project addresses the clean water and infrastructure aspects of sustainable development goals 6 and 9. It also support SDG 2 (zero hunger) because community gardeners will be protecting crop diversity by growing multiple species of edible plants!

About the Millennium Fellow

Schuyler Jones is both a rugged adventurer and sophisticated scholar. From a young age he was catching lizards, watching Bill Nye, and devouring ecology books at his local library. As a boy scout, Schuyler gained an even deeper appreciation for nature as he backpacked across Death Valley, The Grand Canyon, Mount Lassen, and countless other parks! That's why he chose to major in environmental engineering at the University of South Florida. To Schuyler, environmental engineering means protecting the environment from people, and protecting people from the environment. He is excited to expand his impact as a 2022 Millennium Fellow!
