" My curiosity, awareness and my identity of being an African has pushed me into addressing injustices millions of Africans have been facing for over a century. Many people are never aware in how our past as Africans contribute to the issues we face today! Whether on a subconscious or conscious level, Africans are stuck in a cycle of instability, conflict, poverty, marginalization, neglect, exploitation and bad governance due to the colonial legacy left by European Empires. My time at the Millennium Fellowship will give me a channel to express my views on how we can address issues Africans face and how together as a globe, we can contribute to the equality we've been yearning for! "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Living For The Kenyan Environment

My project would be based on demonstrating how the mismanagement and unsutainable use of our natural resources contribute to the droughts, water shortages and water related conflicts we experience in arid and semi-arid regions in Kenya and how they impact vulnerable/marginalised communities living in these regions.

About the Millennium Fellow

Leo Mugo Kariuki is a focused, creative and informed African that is determined to discover the impacts colonialism, neo- colonialism and the international system has had on Africans, their culture and development on the African continent. I'm a 3rd year student at United States International University- Africa (USIU-A) that is located in Nairobi, Kenya. I major in International Relations and minor in Environmental Studies. I'm excited to start my journey with Millennium Fellowship this fall and i'll work towards addressing injustices marginalized communities continue to face due to colonialism and bad governance.
