UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT KARINA RUBY GUTHMANN, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2022.
University of Texas at San Antonio | Texas, United States | Advancing SDG 12 & UNAI 9
" I deeply admire that one of the requirements to be a Millennium Fellow requires students to work on a project that satisfies at least one Sustainable Development Goal. As a person whose whole life has been rooted in stainability and caring for the environment, I'm grateful to have been given the opportunity to support and collaborate with peers cut from the same cloth. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Providing University Students Free Hygiene Products To Advocate For Sustainable Consumerism
The aim of my project was to introduce sustainable hygiene practices and products that are typically inaccessible to college students at no cost. This was done with help from the Office of Sustainability on campus and Tejas Narayanan, another MF. Three products were provided: plastic-free deodorant, bamboo toothbrushes, and silicon menstrual cups.
About the Millennium Fellow

Karina has aimed their focuses on community involvement and volunteerism in order to advocate for sustainability and change. Most recently, Karina applied for and received a grant to be able to implement a project at their school- to supply their school's food pantry with eco-friendly hygiene products that would replace the conventional plastic wrapped, non-recyclable item. After Karina graduates, they plan on attending a graduate program for mycology and forests pathology in order to further understand the microbial aspect of the environment and how to lessen the human impact of it.
