" The Millennium Fellowship provides an excellent framework by acting as a catalyst to many student projects and I value the work that has been done in the past. I am thrilled to be part of this new cohort of young changemakers. The youth often feel despondent at the lack of proper structures and pathways to help them make a change in their communities. However, I am grateful for this opportunity and so amped to add more value to society by advancing the SDGs and UNAI Principles. We are the leaders we've been waiting for! "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Green Sponges Initiative

Green Sponges Initiative is an ecosystem restoration project aimed at halting and reversing the degradation of wetlands in urban areas. The project will build resilience in communities that are impacted by extreme weather conditions caused by climate change and help them to adapt. Wetlands are multipurpose as they can act as sponges to collect stormwater, store carbon from the air, and filter freshwater. Green Sponges will focus on improving flooding response through advocacy, education, service, and innovation. The project plans to advance the City of Johannesburg's Climate Action Plan goals under the themes of Flood and Drought Management as well as Resilient Infrastructure.
