UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT RORISANG MOTLOGELWA, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2022.
University of the Witwatersrand | Johannesburg, South Africa | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 2
" In South Africa there is a saying that goes "motho ke motho ka batho" which means that a person is a person because of other people. I believe that the reverse is also true; that a community can only be strong through the cooperation and collaboration of its individual members. As such, I recognize my responsibility to my community and I believe that being a Millennium Fellow is a great stepping stone towards becoming the type of leader I envision myself to be. I am excited to learn from all the incredible people I will meet along the way. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Let's Talk Mental Health
I wish to start a project that combines mentorship and mental health advocacy for high school students in underprivileged high schools. Mental health is one of my many passions because I have also been impacted. Luckily, I was educated on the subject and was able to seek help. However, this option is not easily available to most people, especially those from underprivileged neighborhoods. Lack of information and conversations on mental health has made South Africa one of the countries with the most mental health issues. Many find themselves scared, confused, and alone without the support of family and friends because they too are unfamiliar with the problem and unfortunately, this is more prevalent in underprivileged societies. For those with the knowledge, seeking help becomes a problem because therapy is relatively expensive. Therefore, as aforementioned, this project will target pupils in underprivileged communities. I hope to start in one of the schools in Soweto, where I will meet with the students at least once a week. There, we will discuss our concerns, address mental health questions, offer advice and coping mechanism strategies, etc, and maybe someday, with enough resources to make this possible, we could have a qualified therapist to advise the pupils. Because this will also focus on mentorship, I will offer career advice, help with tertiary applications, as well as with study advice and needed materials, etc.
About the Millennium Fellow
Rorisang Motlogelwa is a final year International Relations and French student at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Recognizing the urgent need for education on mental health and the unavailability of mental health services to underprivileged communities, she hopes to bring awareness to her own community so to help remove the stigma that is attached to the mental health issues and help produce a mentally healthy South Africa.
