" Giving back to the community was my desire since childhood and I am excited by being a Millennium Fellow I will certainly achieve this dream through the mentorship I will receive. Being a Millennium Fellow also helped me to know that not only money can help give back to the society but rather a creative mind and providing solutions to ongoing problems can help many people out there who really need that help. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Health Education and Awareness
We are carrying a series of outreaches educating a very high density suburb called Epworth in Harare, Zimbabwe, about different health related topics. Our main focus initially was combating the rising use drug abuse amongst the youth, and we decided to advance our project into a health related project since we are all medical students. We educate the Epworth community in public gatherings, churches and clinics about topics like Hypertension, child immunization schedules, importance of Antenatal health care as well as drug abuse and awareness.
About the Millennium Fellow
Farai Praise Makururu is a hard working, strong and self motivated young adult. He was born in Zimbabwe, grew up in Chitungwiza a high density surbub in the capital city of Harare. He is currently studying Business Management Systems and Applications (HBMSDA) at the University of Zimbabwe and he is in third year. Farai witnessed many of Fellows succumbing to drug and substance abuse resulting in them dropping out of school failing to accomplish their life long dreams. This gave him a strong zeal to fight illicit drug abuse targeting mainly high school and college students. He hopes to achieve a drug free society where the future of the upcoming generation is not threatened by illicit street drugs.
