Millennium Fellowship Project: Mitigating Antibiotic Resistance

Problem statement

Antibiotic resistance is when bacteria develop resistance and cease to respond to

antibiotics.lt is one of the top ten global health threat.A new study revealed that in

2019 antibiotic resistance killed 1,27 million , more than AlDS and Malaria annual

deaths. There are many causes of antibiotic resistance but the main driver is misuse

and overuse of antibiotics. To combat this problem the World Health Organization in

2015 ,endorsed the global action plan which have objectives to tackle antibiotic

resistance. The first strategic objective is :to improve awareness and understanding of

antibiotic resistance through effective communication , education and training.Misuse

of antibiotics is not only through human consumption but farmers are also giving

antibiotics to animals unnecessarily.

My Project

My project aim is to educate and raise awareness on proper use of antibiotics. My

target population will be school pupils ,farmers and general public. We intend to

educate school children on proper use of antibiotics through visits to primary and

secondary schools in Zimbabwe.Through television and radio shows we will reach

many people educating them .We will also raise awareness to farmers targeting the

reduction of antibiotics in animal sector.
